Former U.S. President Carter's state funeral began in Georgia and lasted six days

At 7:15 a.m. (local) on January 4, former US President Jimmy Carter's six-day state funeral began in south Georgia for the late president's six-mile, hourlong journey.

Carter's flag-draped casket was escorted by a motorcade from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, to Plains High School, with his family participating in the procession as pallbearers.

According to the funeral plan, Carter's body will visit his home town of Plains, Georgia, and Atlanta, Georgia, on January 4, where a wreath and flag-laying ceremony will be held at the base of The Robert W. Woodruff Memorial Steps at the Georgia State Capitol.

According to Carter's funeral plans, the funeral procession will head to Washington, DC, on January 7 in the morning, where his state funeral will be held in the morning of January 9. His body will then return to Georgia for burial at his family cemetery in Plains on January 10, and he will lie beside his wife Rosalyn Carter when he is laid to rest on that day.

Earlier, the White House announced that January 9, 2025, would be designated as a day of mourning for Carter's passing across the United States.

Carter, 100, passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, on December 29. US President Joe Biden ordered a 30-day display of the national flag at half-staff in honor of Carter at the White House and other US government establishments on that day.
