Presidential Guard Service of South Korea: If they cooperate in executing the arrest warrant for the president, it will "constitute dereliction of duty"
Park Jong-joon, director of South Korea's Presidential Security Service, said on the 5th that as there were procedural issues regarding the arrest warrant that were not clearly resolved through judicial means, executing the warrant would mean that the Presidential Security Service had given up on its presidential security duties, and thus would be negligent.
Park said that the Presidential Security Service did not want to prevent the investigative authority from carrying out its mission. Although the suspended president Yoon Suk-yeol is currently in a position of being impeached, with the National Assembly having passed an impeachment motion, the Presidential Security Service insisted that the current president was still the president. He was democratically elected by the people, so it was necessary to maintain his dignity as president in accordance with the law.
Park Jong-joon called for the Special Prosecutor's Office of South Korea and the National Investigation Headquarters to study the investigation procedures carefully and help to maintain the dignity of the democratically elected president.
The Special Prosecutor's Office of South Korea, which is in charge of investigating President Yoon Suk-yeol, attempted to execute the arrest warrant against the suspended president on March 3. However, the Presidential Security Service blocked the prosecutors from entering the presidential residence and taking Yoon into custody. The two sides remained deadlocked and in a state of confrontation for several hours, and the prosecutors ultimately decided to suspend the arrest.
