Sweden and Norway issue blizzard warnings; public transportation will be affected

On January 5, local time, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued orange and yellow warnings for snowstorms due next week. The Swedish Transport Administration has entered national emergency mode and urged the public to avoid car and train travel.

The severe cold has already disrupted train traffic in northern Sweden. The Swedish national railway company was forced to cancel all night trains on the Umeå-Boden and Luleå-Kiruna routes from January 4 to 6.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute also issued an orange warning for snowstorms on the same day, which will affect parts of southern and eastern Norway. It is reported that due to heavy snow and strong wind warnings, train traffic in eastern Norway from January 6 to 7 will be scaled back. Some areas in eastern Norway may experience strong winds and 30 to 40 centimeters of snow on January 6.
