The US Supreme Court rejected the request to stay the trial of Trump's "hush money" case

WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 -- The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) denied an application by former US President Donald Trump's lawyers to delay a judgment in his alleged hush-money case of 2016.

The US top court denied Trump's emergency request "to block that decision's judgment" to be delivered this month 10, by a vote of 5-4 on Saturday.

Earlier Saturday, the New York state appeals court also rejected Trump's lawyers' efforts to postpone the judgment. A court filing indicated that the appeal in the hush-money case was no longer "pending" in the appeals court because New York Appellate Division Justice Jenny Rivera declined to sign off on a stay requested by Trump's attorneys.

Trump's lawyers simultaneously filed motions in both the New York State appeals court and the US Supreme Court for a stay on the judgment. SCOTUS has not yet reached a decision on this motion.

Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg's office filed a brief on Friday night with New York's appeals court opposing the stay application, arguing that the request was not made before the judgment. The filing said that the motion for postponement "would needlessly prolong the proceedings while resting on the misguided notion that a president elect has immunity from prosecution."

In the meantime, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan had decided on Jan. 3 to deliver his own judgment on the hush-money case.
