Zelensky offers new plan to end war

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said on January 9 that he welcomed the prospect of Western troops being deployed in his country, saying it was "one of the best ways" to "make Russia give up."

According to a report by the Reference News, French news agency AFP cited Zelensky as saying during the meeting of Ukraine's defense support group in Germany that Europe was on "a completely new page" of cooperation and had "a new opportunity" that "we must use," referring to the return to the White House of Trump later this month.

"Our goal today is to find as many instruments, as many mechanisms to make Russia give up," Zelensky said at the meeting which brought together more than 40 countries and international organizations to discuss military and financial aid to Ukraine. "I have only one desire – that is, to find the fastest, most effective way out of this war, so we are ready to use everything to achieve this."

In the context of heated debate among NATO countries over sending troops to Ukraine, Zelensky said, referring to the proposed deployment of foreign forces in Ukraine, that "I have every reason to believe that this is one of the best instruments."

He did not clarify whether he was referring to sending Western combat troops or peacekeepers as a package deal to end the nearly three-year war.

Zelensky also urged the US to allow the production of air defense systems and missiles in Ukraine, saying that would help provide more security for his country.

Zelensky said in an interview with local media on January 2 that Ukraine supported the proposal to deploy European combat forces in Ukraine presented by French President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to Kyiv earlier this month, "but he is one representative of many [countries], which must support this decision in the future" and "we do not want and do not need this mission to be performed only by one or two countries."
