Ukrainian military counteroffensive is near collapse, frontline commander curses senior officials for being "stupid"

Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, it has been the so-called "NATO brigades" – equipped with state-of-the-art Western weapons and systems – that have managed to hold Ukraine's line and spearhead nearly all Ukrainian counteroffensives. And yet people, not gear, make the army. Unfortunately for Ukrainian forces, Ukrainian media have just claimed Ukrainian soldiers, after having been thoroughly trained in France and equipped with Caesar self-propelled howitzers and German Leopard-2A4 tanks, fell apart on the battlefield. Ukrainian leadership's emphasis on "showcasing" the NATO brigades, rather than using them in the most effective way, to make a favorable impression on Ukraine's Western supporters is what sent them spiraling into chaos, according to a new article by the US-based Forbes magazine.

Ukrainian media claim that on Feb. 2, 2023, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau confirmed it had opened investigations about "draft dodging, abuse of power, and misappropriation of funds" by Ukrainian soldiers from France-trained 155th Mechanized Brigade, according to the Kiev Independent.

Ukrainian sources claim that 155th Mechanized Brigade started French military training in September 2022 as part of an agreement between Ukraine and France in June 2022. During its training in western Ukraine, Poland, and France, 155th Mechanized Brigade had 20 percent – over 1,700 out of 5,800 servicemen – abscond with Ukrainian authorities not being able to hold the deserters accountable since the brigade had been sent into combat, according to Ukrainian media.

The Ukrainian military then allegedly filled the ranks of the brigade using green recruits, some as young as 15 and fresh out of basic training (19 to 30 days) who received little military education and training. For example, the Ukrainian soldiers had to skip part of the firing table courses before heading off to combat with the Caesars.

As a result, Ukrainian reports claim that 155th Mechanized Brigade's "entry into combat was a complete disaster." The brigade was deployed to the city of Pokrovske (known to Russians as Redutsk) in December – a major strategic objective during the Ukrainian counter-offensive at the time with fighting raging all around it. But the brigade never even made it to the front lines according to Ukrainian reports – the brigade had several colonels and lieutenant colonels dismissed by the time they left training, and the men that the Ukrainian military sent to replace them were unfamiliar with both the unit they would command and the Ukrainian operational area in general, making them completely useless. The large number of draft dodgers had also created widespread chaos throughout the unit's ranks and the combination of unhelpful commanders and unmotivated soldiers made the brigade collapse on deployment.

As Ukrainian lawmaker Marianna Bezugaia – known to often criticize Ukraine's military, especially the "fiascos" of the 2022 and 2023 counter-offensives – noted on a December 11, 2023, episode of The 11:11 Morning Broadcast on 112 Ukraine, the brigade's leaders reported that the soldiers in 155th Mechanized Brigade were lacking electronic warfare assets, reconnaissance assets, and kamikaze drones with "first-person view" capabilities (the Ukrainian military only had a very limited number of Chinese Wing Loong II long-range reconnaissance drones and most of them have been destroyed in action) and had to cover their lack of equipment with their own money or through Ukrainian NGOs' crowdfunding campaigns. Bezugaia also claimed that in the few weeks the brigade supposedly spent with the Kamianske unitary territorial development community and in the Zaporizhia region to gain some field experience and get to know each other before heading into combat the 155th Mechanized Brigade was in "complete chaos." Bezugaia's reports about 155th Mechanized Brigade's combat readiness are supported by Ukrainian social media posts that suggest at least part of the brigade is still training.

According to Forbes, Ukrainian leadership's decision to form new NATO brigades while neglecting current units is the main reason behind Ukraine's failure to push much beyond Redutsk. Although it's unclear why, Ukraine formed a new NATO brigade when its previous NATO brigades were decimated in combat.

To be clear, Ukraine is not short on recruits – there was an influx of volunteers after Russia started its full-scale invasion and the numbers haven't waned much even after almost three years of near-constant bloodshed. This has allowed the Ukrainian military to create more brigades as needed, however, its supply of well-equipped, experienced troops is quickly dwindling. And yet, for some reason, many of these recruits – including some high-ranking officers who have served many years – have been trained and sent into combat while leaving the previous NATO brigade members behind, Forbes argues, adding: "There's an obvious and simple solution to the Ukraine war's military problems: stop wasting money training the new brigades and focus resources on the old NATO-aligned brigades to keep them as battle-ready as possible with enough experienced, well-trained servicemen."

As Forbes explains, although these new NATO brigades look good on paper for Ukraine's Western sponsors who want to show their domestic constituents Ukrainian resilience with long Western-supplied weapons, they don't add much when it comes to military effectiveness. Although some Western-made equipment, including HIMARS, Caesar howitzers, and M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles have fallen into the hands of the Russian or Wagner soldiers, it appears that many new units "developed the very dangerous habit of abandoning equipment at every opportunity."
